Dryer Broken Down?

Our dryers aren’t domestic machines. Bigger drums, far more airflow, and proper heat — moisture gets carried out of the load instead of circling around in it. That’s why a wash that would tie up a home dryer for hours is folded and in the car in well under an hour here.

There are three sizes, so you can match the drum to the load rather than doing three small cycles:

• Large 14KG — up to two laundry baskets, or a queen duvet
• X-Large 22KG — up to four baskets, good for blankets and duvets
• XXL 34KG — up to six baskets, the one for a serious backlog

You’re not buying a fixed cycle — you choose how many minutes you want, and you only pay for those. Time starts at $1.20.

• Large 14KG — $1 per 5 min + 20c start fee. A 30-minute load of clothing works out at $6.20.
• X-Large 22KG — $1 per 4 min + 20c start fee. Around $7.20 for 28 minutes.
• XXL 34KG — $1 per 3 min + 20c start fee. A duvet needing about 50 minutes comes to $17.20.

Start with these and add time if a load needs it:

• General clothing — about 30 minutes
• Towels, jeans and heavier cottons — closer to 40 minutes
• Duvets and blankets — about 50 minutes

The one rule that matters most — use the door as your guide. Pick the dryer drum your load will fill only halfway up the door opening. That’s the sweet spot for both performance and cost, because wet washing needs room to tumble. Cram it in and it takes longer and costs more, which is why stepping up to a bigger drum is often the cheaper option, not the dearer one.

Worth knowing: washing machines are the opposite — those you can fill right to the top of the door opening. It’s only the dryers that want the extra room.

Shake items out as they go in rather than dropping in a wet clump, and pull anything you’d rather line-dry out first.

Parts and technicians take time. In the meantime you can keep the household running with one trip a week rather than a house full of drying racks.
